Why Do You Postpone Yourself?

The Perfect Moment is a Myth

“To begin, begin.” – William Wordsworth

Have you ever noticed how much energy we spend putting things off? Last year, I filed my taxes just hours before the extension deadline. The task should have taken a few hours, yet I spent months worrying about it.

For 2026, I’ve committed to changing this habit. I want to stop trading time for stress and tackle tasks promptly. But this reflection isn’t just about taxes. It’s about a bigger, more common issue many of us face: postponing ourselves.

The Hidden Cost of "Later"

Postponement is more than procrastination. Procrastination is avoiding individual tasks like writing a report or sending an email. Postponement is delaying fundamental actions or changes that have a long-term impact. Starting a new career, pursuing personal goals, or becoming the person you aspire to be—these are the things we push back.

When we postpone, we trade present discomfort for imagined future ease. We tell ourselves, "I'll start next month," or "I’ll do it when things settle down." But the "perfect moment" never comes.

We create a fantasy where our future selves are miraculously more motivated or disciplined than we are today. The truth is, future you will be just as human as present you.

My Lesson on the Myth of Perfection

This mindset affected my personal life too. My wife and I waited until we were almost 40 to start a family. We kept delaying for "the right time"—better savings, more stability, career milestones. But no signal ever arrived telling us it was the perfect moment.

Having children has been the greatest joy in my life, but I sometimes wish I hadn’t waited so long. The experience taught me a valuable lesson: if you know you want something eventually, the right time to start is now—unless there’s a truly compelling reason not to.

Similarly, I spent years postponing this newsletter. I kept waiting for the perfect idea, more experience, or extra time. When I finally began, I found meaning not in the subscriber count but in the sense of connection and growth. I wish I had started sooner.

Tech and the Waiting Game

This pattern is everywhere, especially in the tech world.

For example:

  • Teams postponed addressing technical debt until after launches, leading to constant firefighting.
  • Engineers avoided giving feedback, waiting for "a better time."
  • Developers postponed learning new skills, waiting to "have more bandwidth."

But here’s the reality: perfection does not exist. Whether it’s fixing technical debt, improving systems, or growing as a professional, the best time to start is now.

Why Do We Really Postpone?

Often, postponement feels like a practical decision, but it’s rooted in fear.

When we delay, we protect our dreams. The business we haven’t started can’t fail. The difficult conversation we haven’t had can’t go wrong. But while we shield ourselves from failure, we also shut out the possibility of success.

In reality, growth only comes when we take action—not when conditions are perfect, but despite their imperfection.

To Begin, Begin

Wordsworth’s advice is clear: “To begin, begin.”

Not when you’re ready.
Not when the timing feels right.
Not when you’re 100% assured of success.

Just begin.

Your Move

What are you postponing right now? Are you delaying a decision, avoiding a conversation, or setting aside a goal?

Whatever it is, take one small step today—not next week or next month—today. Because postponing isn’t just about avoiding a task. It’s about postponing yourself.

And haven’t you waited long enough?
